The crew of the New Zealand low budget Zombie film Tonight They Come! are filming in a forest location beside a rural in town Central Otago. The troubled shoot goes from bad to worse when key cast and crew are stuck down by a mystery illness contracted from the nearby town...
The replacement runner, WESLEY PENNINGTON arrives on set fresh out of film school and bubbling with enthusiasm. Wesley believes this film could be his big break and he might even get his own Zombie script read by the right people! However he quickly discovers the shoot isn’t going smoothly. There’s bickering between the lead actors, ADAM “The Body” HARRISON (the now long forgotten action hero of the ’90s) and JESSICA VALENTINE (the minor award winning actress with the major award worthy boobs). The director STANLEY MARTIN PATRICK is on the verge of having a mental breakdown as he watches his first self-funded film implode along with his future career prospects. While unintentionally making a bad impression as a runner, Wesley tries to make a good impression on the beautiful catering girl SUSAN FORD (who hates cooking). Wesley’s nerdy awkwardness doesn’t immediately impress Susan but they do share something in common, both being very bad at their jobs!
The mystery of the townsfolk’s sickness is solved when they start turning into shuffling un-dead Zombies. Of course the crew are too busy to notice, after all they’re very behind schedule! As they begin filming a large scene involving a lot of Zombie extras from the village, they finally realise that some of the Zombie extras may in fact be extra real! By this stage it’s too late for most of the crew to escape alive... Wesley is one of the first to discover that the Zombies are real and along with Adam (who has been infected by a Zombie but does not tell anyone), Susan and the easy going Location Manager TANE HENARE, they try to escape the now deadly film set in a production car.
Unfortunately the plan hits a snag when Wesley remembers he left the car in a ditch and they can’t get it out. Even more unfortunately the Zombies begin running, forcing the group to hide… in the woods…at night...
