In 194 Princess Te Puea Herangi had a vision where a fleet of waka (war canoes) each representing major tribes of Aotearoa (New Zealand) would assemble to commemorate the centenary of signing the treaty of Waitangi.
50 years later, on the 6th of February 1990 at Waitangi, 1000 paddlers in 22 waka realised her dream.
Through waka a unity within tribes has been harnessed and presented for the world to see.
